At Breast Cancer Specialists of Louisiana we utilize the latest techniques and treatment modalities to provide our patients with the highest level of care. Our main treatment options for breast cancer include: Radiation Therapy, Chemotherapy, Hormone Therapy and Targeted Therapy. Depending upon the individual patient, one or more of these treatments may be utilized in providing the best care possible in the fight against breast cancer.

Radiation therapy

Radiation therapy has been an essential tool in the fight against breast cancer for many years. This treatment involves the utilization of x-rays or other types of radiation in order to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing. There are two types of radiation therapy that may be used – depending upon the type of cancer, the stage it is at and the individual needs of the patient.

External Radiation

Therapy utilizes specialized equipment outside of the body to transmit radiation toward the cancer.

Internal Radiation

Therapy delivers a radioactive substance directly into or near the cancer through the use of wires, needles, catheters or other devices.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy utilizes drugs that are specifically formulated to kill cancer cells and/or stop their growth. The chemotherapy drugs may be administered by mouth, injected with a needle or delivered by through intravenous (IV) therapy. There are two main types of chemotherapy that may be used – depending upon the type of cancer, the stage it is at and the individual needs of the patient.

Systemic Chemotherapy

Is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle – with the drugs reaching the cancer cells through the bloodstream.

Regional Chemotherapy

Is delivered directly into the cerebrospinal fluid, organs or a body cavity – allowing the drugs to attack the cancer cells in those specific areas.

Hormone Therapy

This type of cancer treatment works by removing hormones or blocking their harmful actions – which can stop cancer cells from growing. While hormones are natural substances produced by glands in the body and circulated in the blood stream, in some cases hormones can cause certain cancers to grow. Two of the main types of hormone therapy for breast cancer involve the use of tamoxifen and aromatase inhibitors.

Tamoxifen Hormone Therapy

Is often given to patients in the early stages of breast cancer, as well as those with cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastasized). Because this therapy may increase the chance of developing endometrial cancer, patients should have an annual pelvic exam and report any unusual vaginal bleeding to their doctor immediately.

Aromatase Inhibitor Hormone Therapy

Is given to some postmenopausal women who have hormone-dependent breast cancer. This therapy decreases the body’s estrogen, which is a substance that the cancer cells need in order to grow. Aromatase inhibitors may also be used for the treatment of early stage breast cancer instead of tamoxifen therapy in certain cases.

Targeted Therapy

Targeted therapy utilizes specialized drugs or other substances to identify and attack specific cancer cells without harming normal cells. Two of the main types of targeted therapy used in the treatment of breast cancer utilize monoclonal antibodies and tyrosine kinase inhibitors.

Monoclonal Antibody Therapy

Utilizes several types of antibodies that are made in the laboratory. These antibodies attach to the substances that help cancer cells grow – allowing the antibodies to kill the cancer cells, block their growth or keep them from spreading. These antibodies are delivered by infusion and may also be used in combination with chemotherapy.

Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors

Consist of a substance called lapatinib, which blocks the effects of certain proteins inside tumor cells. This type of targeted therapy may be used with other drugs to treat patients with breast can.
