At Breast Cancer Specialists of Louisiana we are committed to providing women with the latest and most effective breast reconstruction procedures available anywhere. We offer three main options for breast reconstruction: DIEP Flap, Latissimus Dorsi Flap and Tissue Expansion/Implants. We understand that each patient is an individual and every case is different – and that’s why we offer multiple options to meet the unique needs of the women and families we are dedicated to serving.

DIEP flap surgery is widely acknowledged as one of the most advanced and effective methods of breast reconstruction utilizing the body’s own tissue. Pioneered by Dr. Robert Allen in 1992, this method of breast reconstruction is provided by provided by Dr. Stephen J. Delatte and Dr. Hugo St. Hilaire. DIEP flap involves removing a “flap” of skin and fat from the patient’s own abdomen and transplanting it to the breast. DIEP stands for Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator Flap – which refers to the blood vessels that nourish this particular region of the abdomen. This technique represents the absolute state-of-the-art in breast reconstruction and typically results in a natural, normal appearance with less scars on the breast. DIEP flap may be performed simultaneously to a mastectomy or at a later time. It is also possible for this procedure to be performed in certain cases even after the mastectomy has been performed in the past. To find out if you are a candidate for DIEP flap surgery, contact us today to get started.

Tissue expansion is a relatively simple procedure that enables the body to “grow” extra skin for use in reconstructing breasts (as well as other parts of the body). A silicone balloon expander is inserted under the skin near the area to be repaired. The balloon is then gradually filled with salt water over time – causing the skin to stretch and grow. It is most commonly used for breast reconstruction following breast removal, but may also be used to repair damaged skin on other parts of the body or in certain cosmetic procedures. While the information provided here is meant to give you a basic understanding of the procedure, it is not meant to answer all of your questions. Because your results will depend on many factors related to your individual case, it is important to speak with your surgeon if you have questions or would like to learn more about this procedure.
